Is your country overpopulated? (Map)

Published by

With the rise of immigration, open borders and cheap access to movement the world has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Add to that changes in culture, health standards and life expectancy and the world is starting to get very lopsided.

Geography is not all equal, some countries have far more living space, and others such as Australia, Canada and Russia might be massive in terms of land space, but very small in terms of living space. With the vast majority of the populations living in a very small percentage of the land. 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border, Australia is the largest island in the world, yet almost the entire population lives on the coastal regions, with desert conditions covering the majority of available land.

Reddit user TeaDranks has created a cartogram map of the world based on population. And you can clearly see which countries face massive population issues. vastly growing in size compared to their actual land mass.

As you can see, Australia, Canada and Russia have severely shrunken on this map, where as India, Malaysia and Nigeria have grown significantly. The United States has actually not changed that dramatically, even with years of being the number one destination for immigration.

The Middle East is also rather small in terms of population, with the majority of countries shrinking, especially Saudi Arabia, again this can be put down to vast areas of uninhabitable desert land.

Industrialized countries have major cities that can house huge amounts of people in small areas, Manhattan alone has a larger population than some countries in this map. And you can see that Japan and Taiwan both make use of major industrialized cites to house their very large populations.

What does this mean for the United States? It shows that even though the population is growing, it s only know catching up with the actual size of the country. And with vast rural land, and major cities there is likely room for further growth. If that comes from immigration or natural births and a higher life expectancy only time will tell. But with major competitors in the form of Brazil, India, China, and Nigeria, America will want to make sure it can continue to be the economic powerhouse it is, by keeping a quantitative edge in population, while making sure the country does not suffer from over population.

Factors to note:

Overpopulation is a function of the number of individuals compared to the relevant resources, such as the water and essential nutrients they need to survive. It can result from an increase in births, a decline in mortality rates, an increase in immigration, or an unsustainable biome and depletion of resources.

Many countries are large in size, but very small in terms of living space. Often this results in great wealth for said countries, as uninhabited areas can be filled with accessible raw materials.

To be sustainable a country should be able to feed itself with farm land, or have skills or materials that can be traded for a steady supply of food products.

Water access is one of the most important factors in over population. Water is very expensive to transport, and vital to all forms of industry and life.

Larger populations tend to have larger GDP’s ad more influence on the world.

The most “overpopulated” areas in the world are in Far East Asia, and therefore Americas “pivot to Asia” will likely be one that continues for the entirety of the 21st century.

Compare this map to a normal* map below

*The standard map you know and love, is factually very incorrect, turning a 3d shape into 2d, leads to issues with the data. Normally leaving countries south of the border much smaller than their northern counterparts. EG Greenland is not bigger than all of Africa! in fact it is not even bigger than Australia.

Just for fun!

Take a look at the map of the world if it was upside down. And remember, the Space has no up and down, so there is no reason why this could not be a suitable map of the world.

Population Density gives us some real perspective.
